Saif Malik Wins Best Writing Prize At British Society for Gene and Cell Therapy Competition

saif
4th year student Saif Malik won the British Society for Gene and Cell Therapy’s writing prize.

The competition required participants to submit an original piece of writing related to gene or cell therapy that could be understood by a non-expert audience.

On participating in the competition, Saif said:

“I wanted to enter the competition because it challenged me to portray my project in a creative way and that is something we do not often get the chance to do with traditional scientific writing.

‘I thoroughly enjoyed putting it together and it built on my creative writing skills that can be applied to any future endeavour."

Saif based his article around his PhD project. The article was titled: Renal artery: A one-way street to fixing the kidney?

Saif’s PhD project centres around using ultrasound guided lipid nanocomplexes to deliver novel therapies to the kidney for treating childhood glomerular disease.

In the article, Saif highlighted the importance of improving targeted delivery of gene therapies to the kidney for treatment of childhood glomerular diseases. He explained he used a novel ultrasound guided injection directly into the renal artery, thus bypassing issues with system circulation.

The article will be published on the BSGCT blog at the end of this month.

"I was delighted to win! I would encourage everyone in the field to enter next year."

Saif is based at UCL’s Institute for Child Health (ICH) and Centre for Advanced Biomedical Imaging (CABI).
