PhD Student Awarded £45,000 MTSC Grant

C
Final year PhD student Anna Worsley successfully secured a grant awarded by MedTec SuperConnector (MTSC), the start-up business accelerator.

The MTSC programme offers professional business training and a £45,000 grant to help accelerate the translation of research over the course of 6 months.

Anna’s Thesis looks at biomaterials for diabetic chronic wounds and will be part of the MTSC programme’s fourth cohort, carrying out research from July 2020 - January 2021.

With continuous support from her multidisciplinary supervision team, Professors Liam Good (RVC), Janice Tsui (UCL & NHS), Wenhui Song (UCL) and Dr Mark Portou (NHS). Anna is aiming to investigate the commercial potential of novel hydrogels that were developed as part of her PhD for the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers. The team also hope to start the next steps for their translation into clinics and investigate their use in other skin disorders.

Upon being awarded the MTSC grant Anna said:

“I've worked on a few different drug delivery technologies over the past 3 years.

'I opted for the MTSC programme because of the intensive business training and support that accompanies the grant.

I would like to move into industry, preferably a start-up so the business training involved will hopefully help a lot with my career. I wasn't expecting to be successful so I was surprised and excited when I got onto the programme.”
