Congratulations Alice Morrell: Faculty of Life Sciences competition winner and UCL Runner Up!

u
Third year PhD student Alice Morrell won the Faculty of Life Sciences competition (FLS 3MT) an academic competition that cultivates students' presentation and research communication skills and challenges them to describe their research within three minutes.

Alice bested 15 candidates in her faculty on the way to securing her place in the UCL final. Each participant was given one static powerpoint slide where they had to summarise their PhD and a total of 97 people tuned in online to watch the 16 finalists present.

“I looked up what the 3MT was and thought it would be a good chance to practise presenting, especially online as all in person conferences are off this year and most likely some of next year.

‘My idea was to make it a story and to try and take people out of lockdown and into the lives of zebra in the African bush.’

‘The talks were incredible. I was completely surprised to have won which meant I got a place in the UCL final... little did I know this was to take place two days later on the Wednesday.

“The quality of talks was amazing.”’

All 10 finalists were selected upon winning their faculty competition.  Alice received a Runner Up prize of £100 in Amazon vouchers and the winner received £200 and a place in the national semi-final, with the final prize being a £3000 grant for public engagement activities funded by UKRI.

“As I'm approaching my final year I am aware the lack of in person conferences and networking events will have an impact on getting my research heard and ultimately getting a job. This opportunity has given me the confidence to try more online networking events or even create videos of my work which may be the future of conferences/events.

‘It was such a fun experience and I learnt so much from watching the other talks as well.”
