Claudia Sisa: Curcumin - Novel Treatment in Neonatal Hypoxic-Ischemic Brain Injury
Inflammation, oxidative stress and cell death are major features of neonatal hypoxia-ischemia (HI) brain damage. Curcumin is a natural compound well known for its pleiotropic characteristics and its anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and anti-apoptotic proprieties, making it a potential treatment for neonatal HI.
We tested a formulation of curcumin in DMSO in a mouse model of neontal HI, demonstrating its neuroprotective effects in a dose dependent manner. Importantly, we found that curcumin treatment maintained its neuroprotection even if administered with a delay of 2 hours from the original HI insult.
