Bethan Davies won ‘Best Poster’ at the Bone Research Society 2021 conference for her abstract titled: ‘Automated image segmentation for analysis of in vitro osteoclast endpoints.’

The Bone Research Society (BRS) was founded in 1950 and is one of the largest national scientific societies in Europe, dedicated to clinical and basic research into mineralised tissues and is one of the oldest societies in the world.

Bethan developed a machine learning-based model to increase the reliability and reproducibility of quantifying osteoclasts, the bone degrading cell. The method also reduces the need to manually identify cells as well as analysis time by 75%.

Upon receiving the award Bethan said: “I was immensely honoured to receive ‘Best Basic Poster’ for this work. When starting my PhD, I had not envisioned incorporating machine learning into my research. I enjoyed learning the principles of this different field and it has really motivated me to improve my coding capabilities. I hope to publish this method in the near future for other skeletal researchers to implement’.

‘This work was made possible with the kind assistance of Dr. Andrew Hibbert, my LIDo Associates nominee and awardee”.

Bethan also attended the virtual Huble exchange in July 2021 and demonstrated extracellular pH can modulate osteoclast size, fusion and restoration. Click here to view the full video.
