Cowrie Scholarship Foundation

Access to university should not be limited by race or social class; everyone should have access to an outstanding academic experience, but this is still not the case. We believe that learning in Higher Education can transform a person’s life and the community around them, creating a more equitable society wand more diverse future leaders.

We empower Black British undergraduates by providing fully funded scholarships (fees + living expenses) in partnership with universities, donors and businesses, supported by mentors. Our university partners pledge fee places, whilst we fundraise to ‘unlock’ these places with maintenance grants and provision of a mentorship programme for our scholars.

Our vision:

• Better educational opportunities for Black British students to build a more equitable, inclusive, diverse workforce.
• More Black British professionals, leaders and change-makers to help create and represent a more inclusive society.
• More Black British academics ensuring scholarship is more reflective of the diversity of C.21 Britain.
• Fewer barriers to higher education to improve opportunity for under-represented, Black British students and improve social mobility.

Partnership with LIDo: Transformational Change through education is the vision and mission of The Cowrie Scholarship Programme. Collaboration with LIDo closely aligns with our vision and mission to provide a step change in education and the research pipeline. 

Together we will undertake the following:

1. Cross-promotion: Participation in LIDo’s undergraduate summer research programme and 1-day Pathways to PhD event.
2. Enhanced Networking across LIDo platform and Cowrie Network:  development of networks for transformational change in the educational landscape for Black and minority ethnic students.
3. Sharing Data and Good Practices
4. Sharing role models/mentors.
